Saidapet Crematorium to Remain Closed for 20 Days; GCC Announces Alternative Facilities

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced that the gas-fired furnace at the Saidapet crematorium, located in Ward 139 of the Kodambakkam Zone, will undergo essential repair and maintenance work.

As part of the maintenance, the crematorium will remain closed for 20 days, from July 17 to August 5, 2026.

According to the GCC, the temporary closure is necessary to carry out repair works on the gas-fired furnace and ensure the facility continues to operate safely and efficiently.

To minimise inconvenience to the public during the maintenance period, the civic body has advised residents to use nearby crematoriums. The GCC has recommended the Annai Sathya Nagar Crematorium (Ward 138) and the Kannamapettai Crematorium (Ward 141) as alternative facilities until the repair work is completed.

The Greater Chennai Corporation has requested the public to cooperate during the maintenance period and make use of the alternative cremation facilities provided.
