Southern Railway has announced a high-speed trial run on the Velachery–St Thomas Mount MRTS corridor, marking a major milestone toward launching passenger services on this long-pending rail stretch.

The trial run will take place on March 5 between 1:30 PM and 6:00 PM as part of the final safety inspection conducted by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS). During the inspection, officials will assess track stability, signalling systems, and overall operational safety before the corridor is opened for public use.

5 km MRTS Extension Project

The Velachery–St Thomas Mount extension is a 5-kilometre MRTS project aimed at strengthening rail connectivity across Chennai. The project has faced several delays in the past due to land acquisition issues and construction challenges, but it has now reached its final stage.

New MRTS Stations

The extension includes three new stations:

- Adambakkam

- Puzhuthivakkam

- St Thomas Mount

Once operational, passengers will be able to travel directly from Chennai Beach to St Thomas Mount via MRTS, creating seamless connectivity with the suburban railway network and the Chennai Metro Rail.

Boost for Chennai Commuters

The new MRTS link is expected to benefit thousands of daily commuters, particularly residents of Velachery, Adambakkam, Nanganallur, and surrounding areas. It is likely to provide a faster and more convenient travel option, while also helping reduce road traffic congestion in the city.

If the trial run and safety inspection are successful, passenger train services on the Velachery–St Thomas Mount MRTS stretch may begin soon, bringing relief to commuters who have long awaited the completion of this important railway project.
