GST Road Traffic Congestion Continues in Tambaram Despite Subway and Skywalk

Traffic congestion on GST Road near Tambaram railway station continues to trouble commuters despite the construction of a pedestrian subway and elevated skywalk aimed at easing movement in the area.

Tambaram is one of Chennai’s busiest transport hubs, connecting suburban trains, MTC buses and long-distance services. However, daily commuters say traffic bottlenecks remain severe, especially during peak hours.

Long Vehicle Queues During Peak Hours

Motorists report that vehicles often line up for nearly two kilometres towards Sanatorium and Chromepet during morning and evening rush hours. Many commuters travelling to catch suburban trains face delays, with some even missing their scheduled services.

Subway and Skywalk Yet to Solve the Issue

Authorities had earlier constructed:

- A pedestrian subway connecting the railway station and nearby market areas

- An elevated skywalk linking the bus stand, railway station and GST Road

- Despite these infrastructure upgrades, traffic flow has not significantly improved.

Key Reasons Behind the Congestion

Residents and road users cite several issues contributing to the persistent gridlock:

- Buses halting on the main GST Road instead of entering designated bus bays

- Autos and share autos parked along the roadside

- Encroachments and roadside vendors narrowing carriage space

- Heavy pedestrian movement near the station entrance

Traffic officials have acknowledged the congestion problem and stated that steps are being taken to improve regulation and deployment of personnel.
