100 New Electric Buses Launched in Chennai at ₹170 Crore Cost

Metropolitan Transport Corporation Chennai (MTC) has added 100 new low-floor electric buses to its fleet at a cost of ₹170 crore, strengthening Chennai’s green public transport network.

The services were flagged off on Monday by Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin at the Thandayarpet MTC depot.

25 AC Electric Buses Included

Out of the 100 newly introduced buses, 25 are air-conditioned electric buses. All vehicles are low-floor models designed to improve accessibility and passenger comfort.

Upgraded Electric Bus Depot Opened

During the event, the Deputy CM also inaugurated the upgraded Thandayarpet electric bus depot, developed at a cost of ₹33.82 crore.

₹289 Crore EV Infrastructure Expansion

In addition, foundation stones were laid for electric depot development works worth ₹289 crore. The projects include:

- Upgrading existing depots at Kalaignar Karunanidhi Nagar, Perambur, Central Workshop-2, Alandur, Avadi, Ayyappanthangal and Padiyanallur into electric depots.

- Establishing six new depots at Thaiyur, Taramani, Varadharajapuram, Ottandhangal, Tiruvallur and Mamandur.

The expansion aims to accelerate the adoption of electric buses in Chennai and support Tamil Nadu’s sustainable urban mobility goals.
