Tamil Nadu Government Schools to Reconstitute School Management Committees for Two Years

School Management Committees (SMCs) in Tamil Nadu government schools are set to be reconstituted after the tenure of the existing committees recently ended.

The School Education Department has instructed government schools across the State to begin forming new SMCs for the next two academic years. The committees will include parent and teacher representatives, along with alumni members, whose inclusion is mandatory.

Awareness Sessions to Be Held for Parents

As part of the SMC reconstitution process, school principals will meet with parents and conduct awareness sessions explaining the importance and responsibilities of School Management Committees.

Schools will also identify parents and other eligible individuals interested in serving on the committees. The election process is expected to be completed by the end of September, as directed by the School Education Department.

Tamil Nadu Government School SMCs to Have 24 Members

School Management Committees are formed to undertake various administrative responsibilities and support the overall functioning and development of government schools, including academic and non-academic activities.

Each SMC will consist of 24 members, including:

- 14 parent representatives

- 1 teacher representative

- The school head

- 2 community representatives, including an elected representative

- 1 educationist

- 4 alumni representatives

Eligibility for Alumni Representatives

The School Education Department has also clarified the eligibility criteria for former students who wish to serve as alumni representatives.

Former students who have studied for at least two years in the same government school or another government school and have completed Class 10 will be eligible to become alumni representatives on the SMC.

The reconstitution of School Management Committees is aimed at strengthening parent participation, community involvement and school-level administration in Tamil Nadu government schools.
