Udhayanidhi Stalin Launches Upgraded Central Depot, Flags Off 145 Electric Buses in Chennai

Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin inaugurated the upgraded Central Bus Depot in Chennai and flagged off 145 new low-floor electric buses, strengthening the city’s push towards green and sustainable public transport.

The upgraded depot has been developed at a cost of ₹52.03 crore as part of efforts to modernise urban transport infrastructure.

145 New Electric Buses Added to MTC Fleet

The newly flagged-off buses will be operated by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC).

Bus Details:

- 100 Air-Conditioned low-floor electric buses

- 45 Non-AC low-floor electric buses

- Equipped with CCTV cameras

- Passenger-friendly low-floor design for easy boarding

- Range of up to 200 km per charge

The buses will operate on key arterial routes across Chennai, improving last-mile connectivity and reducing carbon emissions.

Additional Premium Bus Launch

Alongside the e-buses, 49 premium sleeper-cum-seater buses were also flagged off for the State Express Transport Corporation (SETC), enhancing long-distance travel facilities in Tamil Nadu.

Boost to Chennai’s Electric Mobility

With the addition of 145 new buses, Chennai’s electric bus fleet continues to expand under the city’s sustainable urban mobility initiative.

The upgraded Central Depot will serve as a major hub for charging, maintenance, and operation of electric buses, supporting the government’s vision of eco-friendly and efficient public transportation.
