Wheelchair and Porter Assistance Arranged at Egmore, Tambaram Railway Stations

To address accessibility concerns raised by wheelchair users during redevelopment works, Southern Railway has arranged wheelchairs and temporary porter assistance at Egmore and Tambaram railway stations.

At Chennai Egmore Railway Station, 18 wheelchairs capable of accessing all platforms have been placed at the Gandhi Irwin Road entrance. Signboards have been installed to guide passengers to the wheelchair facility. Porter assistance is also available to help passengers reach their trains and board safely.

A dedicated helpline for Divyangjan passengers has been provided to book mobility assistance. Information about porter services and prescribed charges has also been displayed at suitable locations inside the station.

The temporary assistance will continue until the new footbridge is commissioned.

New Footbridge at Egmore

An 18-metre-wide footbridge is being constructed between Gandhi Irwin Road and Poonamallee Road. The new facility will include:

- 6 escalators

- 5 lifts

- Access to all platforms

- Improved connectivity between the station entrances

The footbridge is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

Wheelchair Assistance at Tambaram

At Tambaram Railway Station, Southern Railway has stationed 13 wheelchairs to support passengers during the ongoing redevelopment works.

A feasibility study has also been conducted to explore the temporary operation of battery-operated vehicles between Platform 1A and other areas, helping passengers with mobility difficulties.

An 8-metre-wide footbridge with lifts and escalators is currently under construction at Tambaram. It will connect all platforms and is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
