The Tamil Nadu government is set to launch the Thai Maman Thanga Mothiram Scheme on September 28, 2026. Under the scheme, eligible babies born in government hospitals will receive a one-gram gold ring.

Children born in government hospitals from June 22, 2026, will be eligible for the benefit. The first batch of 1.28 lakh gold rings has already been procured for distribution.

One-Gram Gold Ring for Newborns

Each gold ring issued under the Thai Maman Thanga Mothiram Scheme will carry a unique serial number and will be supplied in tamper-proof packaging.

The scheme draws inspiration from the traditional Tamil custom of a maternal uncle presenting a gift to a newborn. Eligible newborns will receive the one-gram gold ring before leaving the government hospital.
