In view of the Diwali celebrations, 18,000 police personnel have been deployed across Chennai to ensure the safety and smooth movement of the public. Chennai Police Commissioner A. Arun issued a press release on Friday detailing the extensive security arrangements.

As large crowds gather in Thyagaraya Nagar, Pondy Bazaar, Purasaivakkam, Mylapore, Pookadai, Washermanpet, Koyambedu, and Velachery for Diwali shopping - including firecrackers, sweets, and other festival items - police have been tasked with crowd control, traffic management, and crime prevention.

A total of 16 temporary observation towers have been erected at key locations - Thyagaraya Nagar (8), Washermanpet (2), Kilpauk (4), and Pookadai (2) - where officers are monitoring the situation on a 24-hour rotational basis.

Additionally, four temporary police control rooms and help centers have been set up in Thyagaraya Nagar, Washermanpet, Purasaivakkam, and Pookadai. Through these centers, police are continuously monitoring surveillance camera footage to prevent crimes and assist the public.

To ensure public safety:

- Drone cameras have been deployed in the Thyagaraya Nagar area for crowd monitoring and control.

- Facial recognition technology is being used to identify and apprehend criminals in crowded areas.

- To prevent theft of gold jewelry worn by women shoppers, police are distributing cloth neck guards.

- To avoid children going missing, they are being given rubber wristbands with their parents’ mobile numbers written on them.

Furthermore, plainclothes police officers, both male and female, are patrolling crowded areas to monitor criminal activity, especially cases involving children.

With these comprehensive measures, Chennai Police aim to ensure a safe and peaceful Diwali celebration for all city residents.
