There is some amazing piece of news for the Chennaites!!

It is now said that Chennai city and neighbouring districts would soon get 3 new Doppler weather radars. By this, the rainfall forecast accuracy would improve. Incredible isn`t it!!

It was mentioned by some officials that the aging S band radar at Chennai Port would also be replaced soon. On Saturday, at an event, secretary, ministry of earth sciences, Mr. M. Ravichandran spoke about how there would be 3 X band radars and their locations would be away from Chennai. The reason for this is to form a triangle. By this, neighbouring districts like Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpet would be given importance and would be focussed more.

Since 2002, Chennai city has had an S-band radar operating at Chennai port Trust.  Information is that with a 500km range the radar has been used mainly to track cyclones approaching the coast and monitoring clouds.

At the NIOT campus in Pallikaranai in Chennai, there is a X-band radar with 100kmto 150km range and this helps in tracking rainfall and issuing snowcasts for Chennai. Locations are being finalised now for new radars and this was mentioned by Mr. Ravichandran. He added that in the next few years India would have 100 to 120 radars ensuring no rain activity would go unnoticed.

Aimed at studying Chennai`s urban climate variability, Mr. Ravichandran also inaugurated an urban test bed facility at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology as a part of Mission Mausam.
