Heavy Rain Alert Issued for Multiple Tamil Nadu Districts Till May 27

The Chennai Meteorological Centre has forecast heavy rainfall for Salem, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts on May 22, 2026, due to a trough extending from the central Bay of Bengal to Tamil Nadu through the southwest Bay of Bengal.

According to the latest weather report, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds with speeds of 40 to 50 kmph are likely in isolated places across these districts. Several other districts in Tamil Nadu are also expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall over the next seven days.

Heavy Rain Forecast Across Tamil Nadu

The weather department stated that:

- Coimbatore hill areas, Nilgiris, Theni, Erode and Dindigul may receive heavy rain on May 21 and May 25.

- Tiruvannamalai, Tiruchy, Salem, Namakkal, Vellore, Tirupattur and Dharmapuri districts are likely to receive heavy rain on May 23.

- Coimbatore hill regions, Nilgiris, Vellore, Ranipet and Tiruvannamalai may witness heavy showers on May 24.

- Madurai, Salem and Namakkal districts are also likely to receive heavy rainfall on May 26.

Chennai Weather Forecast

Chennai and suburban areas are expected to witness partly cloudy skies with heatwave conditions continuing in some locations. The weather department has predicted light rain with thunderstorms during evening or night hours on May 22.

The city’s maximum temperature is expected to remain around 41°C to 42°C, while minimum temperatures may stay between 30°C and 31°C.

Heatwave Conditions Continue

The weather department noted that coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal regions may continue to experience above-normal temperatures till May 25. Heatwave conditions are likely at isolated places on May 21 and May 22.

Fishermen Warning

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea from May 21 to May 24 due to strong winds over:

- Gulf of Mannar
- South Tamil Nadu coastal regions
- Kumari Sea areas
- Parts of the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea

Wind speeds may reach up to 60 kmph in some regions.
