How CMWSSB Calculates Water Charges in Chennai
Under the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Act, 1978, installation of water meters is mandatory to calculate charges based on actual water consumption. However, meter-based billing is mainly implemented in commercial and large residential complexes, while most households follow a fixed-rate system.
For Individual Houses and Small Apartments (Below 50 Units):
- All households receiving piped Metro Water pay a flat monthly charge of ₹80, regardless of consumption.
For Apartments With More Than 50 Units (Bulk Metering System):
Charges are calculated based on total water usage, with a minimum monthly charge of ₹80.
Water Consumption Slabs and Rates:
- Up to 10 KL - ₹4 per KL
- 11 to 15 KL - ₹16 per KL
- 16 to 25 KL - ₹24 per KL
- Above 25 KL - ₹40 per KL
Due to limited piped water coverage in several areas, many residents also depend on CMWSSB water tankers and alternative sources to meet daily water needs.
