Posted on: 20/Dec/2013 9:57:36 AM
The National Energy Conservation week was observed in Chennai on 18th December. Mr. N. Viswanathan, the Minister for Electricity informed that the demand has risen annually at the rate of 8%. However, a generation has not risen. The Tamil Nadu Government has taken initiatives on a war-footing to tide over the prevailing severe power shortage. Before the end of the financial year, the shortage will be met; in order to conserve energy, filament bulbs and tube lights will be replaced free with CFL lamps.

Conservation of energy is essential and the public should practice it. A plan to raise the present consumption limit of 500 units under the minimum rates to 1000 units is under study.

With the oil resources expected to go dry in 40 years, and the coal reserves to be exhausted in 200 years, gas reserves for 60 years, it is imperative to conserve all energy sources.

The Tamil Nadu government has instructed 8 types of industries which consume high power to take concrete steps on conservation of energy as set by the government.  New conservation rules are being formulated.
