Posted on: 05/Dec/2013 11:28:17 AM
More tomatoes can be added to a healthy diet as the cost of most vegetables has stabilized in the wholesale market, which has been receiving plentiful fresh produce for a week now.

The tomatoes are brought in lorries to Koyambedu market from Udumalaipettai, Dindigul, Bangalore and Karnataka. Since there was a dearth in harvesting tomatoes, it was sold at a price of Rs 55 per kilo during the months of August and September. During the month of November, tomatoes were sold for Rs 40 per kilo because the supply was increased.

At this point of time, tomatoes were sold for Rs 18 per kilo from last Wednesday in the wholesale market.Local markets also sold tomatoes for Rs 20 per kilo.

Koyambedu Vegetable Market advisor Soundarajan said, “ Since there was less rainfall in the areas where tomatoes are cultivated, the produce was less and because of this there was an increase in price. Now the produce is more and we get more tomatoes. Last month 600 tonnes of tomatoes were brought in 35 Lorries. The tomato, which was sold for Rs 40 is now being sold for Rs 20. People and hoteliers are flooding the market to buy large numbers of tomatoes.”
