Advice to install black boxes in Volvo Buses

Posted on: 04/Dec/2013 6:21:46 PM

The Chennai transport department has suggested that ‘black boxes’ should be installed on all Volvo buses as practiced in airplanes. This would enable to find reasons for accidents, if any happen.

Following the recent accidents in the states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradehs involving Volvo buses, Tamil Nadu transport department is planning and executing accident preventive steps to avoid such accidents.

During the meeting with all Omni-bus owners, the Tamil Nadu Transport department officials recommended periodical eye-testing for the drivers, creating public awareness, and other such steps should be taken up immediately.

Based on this advice, a training camp was conducted for the drivers sponsored by Omni-bus Owners. Eye-tests were completed for the drivers (more than 100) who participated in the training. Instructions were given to follow the rules before starting the bus as well as while running it. The joint collector for transport, Mr. Vijaya Raju inauguareated the training and distributed the CDs about the training. He informed:

“Volvo buses cost about Rs. 1.30 Crores. In order to prevent accidents to these expensive vehicles, several suggestions have been given to the manufacturers, Volvo.  As practiced with the airplanes, Volvo buses also should be fitted with black-boxes.  Fire detectors should be installed in Volvo buses to alert the passengers ( and wake up the sleeping passengers) in the event of fire accidents. Drivers should not tend to sleep and a device monitoring the movements of the drivers’ eyelids should be installed on these buses.”Volvo company has agreed to implement these suggestions
