Chennai
Corporation has built the bio-gas generation plant at Puliyanthope with the
technology provided by Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. Electricity production is
scheduled to start from 26th January, 2014.

Corporation has decided to install bio-gas plants in each region to produce
electricity from the waste collected.As a model, the first bio-gas plant is
being built at Puliyanthope at the cost of Rs. 40 Lakhs in a 356 sq km area.
Bhabha Atomic
Research Centre Technology director, Mr. S. P. Kale, and the Technology
Department’s senior scientist, Mr. Daniel Chellappa had a meeting with Chennai
Corporation officials on Tuesday, 3rd December. They informed: “Bhabha
Atomic Research Centre’s Director has the goal of ‘garbage-free’ India. Our research centre, and the state governments
of Maharashtra and Kerala have joined to install 200 bio-gas plants producing
electricity using the garbage and waste materials collected. Some plans have
already started generating electricity.
At the
Puliyanthope bio-gas plants, started during October, 2013, methane will be produced
from the garbage of 2 tons waste material comprising food, vegetable, meat and
bio-degradable waste. The construction of the plant is nearing completion.
Machinery installation and electrical equipment installation will start soon.
This is expected to be completed soon and the generation of electricity is
expected to start from 26th January. The generation expected is
between 100 to 200 Kilowatts.” Chenai Corporation officials informed: ‘Garbage and waste material collected from
state government owned welfare institutions, private marriage halls, and
hotels, mainly comprising of vegetables, food, and meat will be used. The
electricity generated is intended to be used for street lighting.’
