In the last few days after Cyclone Michaung devastated Chennai, there has been an increase of 50percent garbage. It must be noted that the Chennai roads and streets have been witnessing overflowing dumpsters. Twenty percent of garbage in Chennai was due to sofa sets, cushion pillows plus other items of unusual solid waste like television and spare plastic parts etc.

As against a normal of 6000 tonnes of waste per day, the Chennai Corporation collects 9000 tonnes of waste now. The transfer stations are full of waste now and from here the waste is taken to dump yards. In localities such as Choolaimedu,Tondiarpet, Royapuram, T. Nagar, Arumbakkam etc there is waste rot on the roads. The delay in the door to door collection of domestic waste has led to the residents dumping their house wastes on the roads itself now.

It was mentioned by Perambur based activist Mr. S. Dileepan 8 out of 15 roads in K.M. Garden area has mountains of garbage now. He added that only if the garbage gets removed then the streets would be clean.  Huge pile up of garbage for about a week has attracted rodents in Choolaimedu based Gandhi Street and Bharathiyar Street etc.

A lot of rotten edible food was dumped on the roads in huge volumes as there was no electricity to run refrigerators etc.  This was revealed by Mr. Mahmood Sait, CEO of Urbaser Sumit who is the garbage collection contractor for Chennai. He spoke about how none of the empanelled bulk waste collectors have returned to their duties. This has led to the gated communities, marriage halls, theatres and malls etc dumping their waste on the roads.

It is now said that the Chennai Corporation has been struggling to handle new types of waste like sofas, bed mattresses etc.
