Heavy Rainfall in Chennai Causes Flooding on Major Roads

Chennai, Tamil Nadu: A sudden downpour on Friday morning wreaked havoc in Chennai, leaving the city`s infrastructure strained and several major roads inundated. The Five Furlong Road, which connects Velachery with the Guindy Railway station, bore the brunt of the deluge, with water levels rising significantly due to the intense rainfall.
Between 8:30 AM and 10 AM, Velachery and Alandur areas recorded nearly 70 mm of rain, causing chaos as water levels quickly rose. Some of the city`s arterial roads were submerged in ankle-deep water, disrupting daily life and transportation. In response to the situation, the Greater Chennai Corporation commissioner, Dr. J Radhakrishnan, announced that measures were being taken to divert traffic away from the affected areas and that water removal efforts were underway.
"Except for a few isolated areas, the city remained relatively free from stagnation," Dr. Radhakrishnan assured the public, offering some relief to the worried residents.
During the same period of heavy rainfall, several other parts of the city also saw significant precipitation. Alandur recorded 70 mm, Adyar received 36 mm, Puzhal reported 29 mm, and Perungudi recorded 26 mm of rainfall, highlighting the widespread nature of the weather event. Despite the challenges posed by this sudden and intense rainfall, the city authorities are actively working to mitigate the flooding and ensure the safety and convenience of the residents.
As the Greater Chennai Corporation intensifies its efforts to alleviate the waterlogging on the Five Furlong Road and other affected areas, it serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and infrastructure improvements in the face of unpredictable weather events.
