In the future, when you park your vehicles in the busy congested places in Chennai, then you might have to shell out more money!!
The GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation has now taken an important decision. It would be implementing differential pricing in parking of the vehicles plus reducing the parking charges in the multi=-level parking and increasing parking charges for on-street parking in busy congested areas in the city.
It is learnt that the parking charges in the busy congested places in Chennai such as T. Nagar, Nungambakkam and Egmore etc would be higher than that of outer areas such as Tiruvottriyur etc.
A meeting took place at the Ripon Buildings on Tuesday and in the meeting draft parking policy prepared by CUMTA was discussed. Focussing on the parking as commodity, the police department as well as Chennai Corporation agreed to implement new parking charges.
Based on the models that were adopted in Bengaluru and in Madhya Pradesh etc, draft parking policy for 5904 sq km was prepared. This was according to Mr. I. Jeyakumar, CUMTA special officer. He hinted that a parking policy of 426 sq km was prepared by GCC. Truth is that the draft parking policy of the entire metropolitan area has been readied by CUMTA. The TN govt would notify the parking policy after making some corrections. For improvement in the draft, the GCC Commissioner Mr. J. Radhakrishnan gave his suggestions.
Preparation of detailed management plan:
Mr. J. Radhakrishnan later spoke about how after receiving the approval from the TN govt a detailed management plan (for each cluster in the CMA) would be prepared by the GCC. It must be taken into account that GCC would focus on aspects such as on-street parking, off-street parking, pricing and IT enables services etc. A study on the parking policy would be carried out by CUMTA and it would give recommendation to the local bodies.
According to Mr. I. Jeyakumar, CUMTA special officer, parking should not be treated as commodity. He added that that land value in the prime Chennai areas was high and hence parking rates would also be high.
