Chennai Corporation is planning to expand on-street parking spaces in the city following the success of their current initiatives. Estimates reveal that on an average day, 3,000 out of the total 5,000 equivalent car spaces for on-street parking are occupied. Encouraged by these numbers, the corporation aims to increase the available parking spaces to 12,000. A senior corporation official stated that a survey is underway to identify potential areas for expansion, focusing on bus route roads.
Presently, the city already has on-street parking in locations such as Anna Nagar second avenue, Marina beach service road, Besant Nagar 6th Avenue, and Purasawalkam. The corporation believes that this approach is instrumental in streamlining parking and reducing congestion, as seen in T Nagar, where on-street parking has yielded positive results. The officials are optimistic about replicating this success in other commercial streets as well.
By expanding on-street parking options, the corporation aims to address the parking needs of the growing population and alleviate traffic congestion in Chennai.
