Putting an end to traffic snarls in Chennai - Superb development!!

Posted on: 24/May/2023 9:12:46 AM
Soon in the future, the motorists could travel smoothly in Chennai. The news is that some researchers belonging to IIT Madras have found out a possible solution for the traffic snarls through probe based approach for real time re-timing of traffic signals.

The superb piece of information is that this is the first time a probe based demand responsive signal control has been developed for the roads in India. This was mentioned by some officials.

A study was conducted by the IIT M researchers where travel –time data from 4 sample probe vehicles were used to calculate green and red timings for each signal cycle. It must be noted that a signal  cycle represents time between one green signal to the next green signal or one red signal to the next red signal for a chosen movement.

As per Prof Lelitha Vanajakshi, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways North, chairperson, IITM, it was clear that the off the shelf travelling responsive signalling software from abroad have not worked well in the Indian conditions despite of huge money/effort/time etc that was spent. The implementation needed a large number of sensors and large traffic  stream data. The  ineffectiveness of the software also led to excessive queues and delays at the intersections in Chennai.

Professor Bhargava Rama Chilukuri, department of civil engineering, IIT M spoke about how the findings were published in the International Journal of Transportation Research. He threw light on the mixed traffic conditions present in India. In the end, he mentioned that the effect of the composition was included in the algorithms and that would make it versatile to be used in different cities in India.

In the study, the researchers used travel-time data and not the traditional traffic flow. By this, the algorithm would be easy to be implemented  with variety of probe based data sources.
