When compared to the previous months, there is now a heavy demand for power supply in Chennai. The peak summer has made many use their air-conditioners for a long time now is known.

The electricity minister Mr. Senthil Balaji has mentioned that underground cables would be revamped and upgraded soon. Truth is that in some stretches in Chennai, the underground cables have become old.

The electricity minister spoke about how the power demand touched 4016 MW on Tuesday and how the power consumption has crossed 90 million units per day. He was busy in a meeting with some senior electrical officials yesterday and discussed various steps that would be taken to meet the power demand.  In the coming days, the power demand would  cross 4100 MW also and this was as per the officials

The electricity infrastructure development coupled with maintenance work that was carried out in the last 2 years have resulted in no major power disruptions in Chennai now despite a huge increase in the power demand. The minister then explained that the underground cable network in Chennai has become old and the electricity dept has proposed to upgrade the network with new and additional load facilities. Information is that now the operation and maintenance officers have been asked to  identify the places where the network needed  to be revamped.  The shifting of overhead cables to underground has been pending in 7 divisions in Chennai now and it included Tambaram also.

The electricity minister later mentioned that the power disruptions were projected wrongly as power cuts and it could happen only due to electricity shortage. He hinted that the TN govt has taken steps to put an agreement for purchasing power from April to June to avoid shortage of power. He concluded that the Tangedco has saved more than Rs 1300 crores because of buying power through tender and not through exchanges.
