Construction Progresses on Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway, Travel Time to be Reduced

Construction of the Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway, a 262-kilometre four-lane highway, is progressing in Karnataka. The project, expected to be completed by March 2024, will reduce travel time between the two cities to just 2.5 hours. Passing through Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, the expressway is part of the National Highways Authority of India`s green expressway initiative. Divided into three phases, it aims to strengthen economic activities and connect industrial hubs with the Chennai Port. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 16,700 crore. Upon completion, the current 300-kilometre distance between Bengaluru and Chennai will be reduced, offering improved connectivity and fostering regional development.
Key highlights of the expressway project include:
- It is a four-lane access-controlled expressway that falls under the category of one of the 26 new green expressways being constructed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
- The total length of the expressway is divided as follows: 85 km in Tamil Nadu, 71 km in Andhra Pradesh, and 106 km in Karnataka.
- The project is being executed in three phases, and though progress has been somewhat slow, it is expected to be open to the public by the end of next year.
- The estimated cost of the project is Rs 16,700 crore, and the foundation was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May 2022.
- The expressway aims to enhance economic activities between Bengaluru and Chennai, as well as promote development in tier-3 cities along the corridor. It will also facilitate connectivity between industrial hubs in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh with the Chennai Port.
