Hereafter, the pedestrians need not worry about crossing the very busy GST Road or Grand Trunk Road to reach the Tambaram railway station from MTC and SETC bus stands.

A skywalk cum foot over bridge or FOB has been opened for the pedestrians now and this would connect the above said bus stands with the Tambaram railway station. It is now said that this 11 feet FOB would help the public to move freely between the railway station and bus stands.

Recently, the state Highways department completed the final arm of the skywalk that connects the FOB present on the GST with the existing FOB at Tambaram railway station. The vehicular pile up during the peak hours on the GST Road has been brought down now by the skywalk. It is worthy to mention here that everyday approximately 85000 commuters use the 45m wide GST Road. On the skywalk, the Railways dept has also opened a ticket counter also.

It must be recalled that in 2015 for the safety of the pedestrians a 240m long skywalk cum FOB was proposed. The proposal was made by taking into account the accidents that took place here previously. Point is that GST Road handles 1.7lakhs vehicles per day. With 6 escalators and a ticket counter at the entrance of the station, a skywalk cum FOB was planned.

In the month of August in 2017, the civil works began and FOB on GST Road was completed in 2020. There were some issues in the land acquisition process from the Railways dept and this led to delay in the construction of skyway connecting the FOB on the GST Road with the present FOB at the railway station. An amount of Rs 20 cr has been spent for these skywalk construction. It was revealed by a traffic police personnel that the traffic congestion during the peak hours has come down now.
