Why is the operation of autos doubtful in Chennai in May?

Posted on: 27/Mar/2023 9:30:49 AM
The auto drivers in Chennai are not happy as their demand for a ride hailing app and revision of fares are yet to be fulfilled. As a result, in the month of May, the Chennai auto drivers have been planning to hold a massive hunger strike to seek the TN government`s attention and to fulfill their demands.

The autorickshaw driver unions have been demanding the govt to launch its own ride hailing app using the funds of the welfare board. This was according to Mr. S. Balasubramanian, TN Auto Thozhilalar Sammelanam working president. Information gathered is that the Kerala govt has launched its own app for the citizens. He spoke about how the private app has been fleecing the passengers and drivers with hidden charges. All the stakeholders would be benefited when the TN govt launches its own app.

In 2013 the auto rickshaw fare was revised previously. Last year, the HC of Madras gave orders to revise the auto fares. The government formed an inter-departmental panel headed by JC of enforcement. This panel heard the opinions of the unions on 12th of May  and the opinions of passenger associations on  13th of May in 2022. The transport department has been maintaining silence after the consultations with the unions and passenger associations etc.

It must be noted that the auto rickshaw unions had demanded a minimum fare of Rs 50 and Rs 25 per km. Currently, the minimum fare is Rs 25 for the first 1.8km and Rs 12 for every additional kilometre. The auto drivers want the government to ban illegal bike taxis also.
