As the dumping of garbage has been going on for the last 36 years, there is now  34.02 lakhs cubic metres of garbage here. The Chennai Corporation has been excavating the garbage at a cost of Rs 350.65 crores by bio-mining method and the land is being recovered. Sixty five percent of the work has been completed now and the full work would get over by April 2024.

In the next step, the GCC would be involved in removal of solid waste from the Kodungaiyur dump yard. This has been a long standing demand of the people from north Chennai is known. According to the advice from experts at IIT-Madras, Anna University, GCC has announced tenders in 6 packages for the excavation and recovery of Kodungaiyur garbage dump by bio-mining process.

It is worthy to note that for this above work Rs 160 cr has been allocated as the central govt fund, Rs 102 cr as state govt fund, Rs 378 cr as GCC funds etc for a huge amount of Rs 648.83 crores. By this, 251.9 acres of land would be recovered.

Facilities for waste recycling would be set up in the remaining sites.
