The Phase II metro rail project in Chennai, covering 118.9 km and costing Rs.63,246 crore, is being remotely operated in three channels and involves the construction of over 45 overpasses and tunnels on the three routes. One of these routes is the Madhavaram-Siruserry route, which covers 19.1 km and includes a remote tunnel. Another route is a 26.7 km long distance highway, also featuring a remote tunnel. The project will involve the construction of 49 stations across the three routes.

Tunneling work is currently underway at Madhavaram, Greenway, and is set to begin at other locations in the coming months. The Metro Rail construction work is also set to commence soon at Sterling Road in Nungambakkam, with officials of the Metro Rail Company reporting that a private school building has been demolished to make way for the construction work. The tunnel work in this area is set to start in May.

The Sterling Road Junction and Nungambakkam will be home to two of the new metro stations. Upon the completion of the project, passengers will be able to travel directly to various important locations in the city. The second phase of the metro rail project is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, according to officials.
