In Chennai Metro City, a monthly charge of Rs. 80/- is collected from the residences and the occupants in areas under the jurisdiction of the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) for the facility of Drinking water and sewerage system.

Around 100 Crores Litres of drinking water is supplied daily through the pipe network and vehicles and the drainage system also functions through the pipe network in the 15 zones under the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC).

In the last revision of these charges in 2019-20, the consumption charges for drinking water and the case of drainage systems were increased by 5% for the residential localities and by 10% for the commercial establishments. It was further announced that this would be similarly revised upwards every passing year.

However, due to the onset and raging impact of the coronavirus over the last 2 years, the rates WERE NOT REVISED UPWARDS!

It is learnt that due to the above aspect, CMWSSSB (Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board) stands to incur huge losses!

Due to the above factor, XCMWSSB has decided to increase these rates upwards for the year 2023-24 by 5% for the residential areas and by 10% for the commercial establishment areas,

NOTE THAT THIS INCREASE WILL COME INTO EFFECT FROM 1ST APRIL 2023!

Presently, a monthly charge of Rs. 80 is collected for the residential localities for the drinking water supply and the drainage system. With the above proposal for increase, Rs. 84/- will be collected as charges for the above from 1st April 2023.

For the commercial establishments, the present monthly charges of Rs. 250/- will increase to Rs. 263/-!

As for the residential localities where drinking water is supplied through lorries, for the supply of 6000 Litres is increased from Rs. 475 to Rs. 499/- and for 9000 litres of drinking water, it will be increased from Rs. 700/- to Rs. 735!

The 6000 litres supplied to commercial establishments will be charged Rs. 770/- in place of the present Rs. 700/- and for 9000 litres, it will be increased to Rs. 1100/- in place of Rs. 1000/-.

The system of measuring the consumption through meters was charged Rs40/- up to 10000 litres. Now, this will be increased to Rs. 42/-!

An official of the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) explained that this increase is mainly due to offset the additional expenses incurred by GCC and through the above increase, an additional revenue of Rs. 35 Crores will be collected!
