The residents belonging to Chennai can heave a sigh of relief now!!
The drive against rowdy elements DARE, the drive against criminal offenders DACO, efficient patrolling and more CCTV etc belonging to the Greater Chennai Police or GCP have been highly successful in bringing down the murder for gain, theft and robbery etc in the city now.
In 2022, the number of murders committed in Chennai was 97 and in 2021 it was 94. It is learnt that the number of murders due to enemity has come down to 20 in 2022 from 36 in 2021. The release from GCP mentioned that in 2022 the number of murders for gain was just 4 and it came down from 10 that was in 2021. The history sheeters as well as criminal gangs in the city were closely monitored by DARE and DACO.
Based on the criminal offences, 12 history sheeters were made into 4 groups by 12 deputy commissioners of police under DARE. Under Goondas Act in 2022, the police arrested as many as 424 history sheeters under DARE and DACO. In 20121 they arrested just 270 history sheeters. Nearly 7200 accused were detained by the police in 2022 for security reasons and in 2021 it was 4991.
Truth is that CCTV cameras have helped the police dept to solve many crime cases in the city. The GCP has geotagged 60997 CCTV cameras and repaired 11468 CCTV cameras at a cost of Rs 1.17 crores. The GCP has planned to install about 20000 CCTV cameras in Chennai at various locations to make Chennai a safer place for women and children. To select the locations, a survey is being carried out now. In as many as 2730 locations in Chennai, 8189 CCTV cameras would be installed under the Smart City Mission and Nirbhaya Fund.
