Good news from NHAI regarding the Port-Maduravoyal project in Chennai!!

It has been confirmed by some sources belonging to the NHAI or National Highways Authority of India that at the end of this financial year or in about 3 months work on a 20.6km double decker elevated highway between Chennai Port and Maduravoyal would start.

It must be recalled that in July month the tenders for building a 2 tier 4 –lane elevated corridor from Port to Maduravoyal under the PM Gati Shakthi programme were called for. The delay in getting clearance from CRZ and approval from IR or Indian railways for the project has resulted in non-finalisation of the bids.

As the elevated highway is crossing the railway lines in 2 locations, IR has to give its approval for the drawing. This was according to an officer from NHAI. He hinted that the pursuit of getting approval has been going on and it would happen soon. The bids for these issues would be extended and an agreement would be signed with the selected bidder by the end of this financial year.  It is now said that the elevated corridor would be constructed in 4 packages. Information is that out of a total of 20.6km 12km corridor would be double deckered corridor.

In the year 2012, the project that was inaugurated by 2 chief ministers were suspended because of an issue between NHAI and WRD. This happened when former CM of Tamil Nadu Dr J. Jayalalitha was heading the government. In 2015, the union minister for shipping Mr. Nitin Gadkari tried to break the deadlock between NHAI and WRD.
