Posted on: 07/Dec/2022 9:29:43 AM
It has been 3 years ever since the island nation Sri Lanka has stopped flight services from Jaffna to Chennai. Now, the island nation would once again resume flights from Jaffna to Chennai. The tourism sector of Sri Lanka would be boosted by this. It must be taken into account that the tourism sector is the major source of foreign exchange earnings for Sri Lanka.

The economy of Sri Lanka has gone down so much in the last 2 years from 2020 due to the Coronavirus pandemic. As per the Central Bank of Sri Lanka,  the island nation`s revenue from international tourist arrivals touched USD 107.5 million in November. The cumulative tally for the first 11 months of the year was USD 1129.4 million.

It was mentioned by Sri Lanka`s minister for Aviation, Nimal Sripala De Silva that flights from Palaly to India would resume most probably by 12th December. He added that there would be flights between Jaffna and Chennai. Some improvements in the runways would be needed as the present runway could accommodate only 75 seater flights.

It was in 2019 the airport in Jaffna was named as Jaffna International airport and the first flight that landed there was from Chennai. It must be noted that the 2019 redevelopment of the airport was funded by both Sri Lanka and by India. It must be recalled that earlier India`s Alliance( a wholly owned subsidiary of Air India)operated 3 weekly flights from Chennai to Palaly. The change in the government in 2019 has led to the stoppage of the flight to the island nation.

Ever since it became independent in 1948, Sri Lanka is now facing the worst ever economic crisis. The mishandling of the economic crisis has resulted in street protests there from the April month onwards against the government.
