New important facility that has come up at Marina Beach

Marina Beach is for everybody without any restriction!!
As per the officials from Chennai Corporation, a permanent pathway for the differently able persons would be thrown open on Sunday, 27th November 2022. It was in June the work on the ramp began and an amount of Rs 1.14 crores has been spent for this.
It must be noted that the ramp at this beach is made up of babool, red maranthi and Brazilian wood etc and is 263m in length and 3m in width. The presence of hand rails would be of huge help to many elderly persons here. For easy entry and exit of the people for every 10m access points have been provided also. Since 2016, temporary ramps have been set up here and many have been demanding for permanent structures.
It must be recalled that since 1998 talks regarding setting up of permanent structures for the differently able persons in the beach have been going on. In the beginning, a ramp was planned near the Gandhi statue but it was moved to facilitate metro rail work in the area. Discussions about the construction of ramps took place between Chennai Corporation officers and activists.
Geosynthetic material that would not be damaged by rains was suggested by the officials from the corporation but the activists suggested wooden ramps as these ramps would be easier for the differently able persons. The activists were concerned about the safety of the differently able persons and have asked the authorities to address the issue of help booths and accessible toilets.
