Good news regarding Marina Beach in Chennai?

Posted on: 24/Nov/2022 9:22:06 AM
The efforts taken by GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation at the Marina Beach have borne fruits now!!

The TN government has been taking steps to ban the use of plastics at the famous Marina Beach in the last few years. Despite many efforts, the sand of this beach has been full of reused plastics etc. The good news now is that the vendors have changed and they have opted for eco-friendly items instead of plastic ones for serving foods at the food stalls. Now, the vendors at this beach have purchased glass plates or palm leaf bowls etc

It is a known fact that for the last 6 months GCC has been making the vendors here to shift to more eco-friendly options to serve foods.

It is noteworthy that a pack of 50 palm leaves cost Rs 600 to Rs 750. Truth is that despite selling each plate of food for Rs 20 to Rs 25 here the vendors were able to find their profits marginal at best.

Many vendors who use glass plates to serve foods to the public here clean the plates with water, soap and brush but cleanliness of plate is not guaranteed totally and palm leaf bowls are preferred. One vendor revealed that they have stopped using the plastic plates and how the GCC officials inspect the stalls every day.

The public and the vendors who violate the rules at the beach are being fined by the 16 member squad here. This was mentioned by Mr. Gagandeep Singh Bedi, GCC Commissioner. To prevent littering, a spot fine of Rs 100 was levied at the beach. Point is that the team collectd Rs 2100 from 19th to 22nd of November.

It is important to note that in the mornings sand sweeper tractors were used to remove waste and the waste would be taken to the nearest garbage insulation plant.
