The Mugalivakkam locality has been flooded  now and the residents are finding it difficult. This is the situation for the last 3 days here. It is worthy to note that the water from Porur lake surplus canal has spilled over the streets here. Another reason for flooding in Mugalivakkam was because of the canal that also collects run-offs from Paraniputhur, Pattur and Mngadu etc. Now, there is an upper catchment flow of 1100 cusecs that is higher than the carrying capacity.

A resident of Thiruvalluvar Nagar in Mugalivakkam expressed his thoughts. He spoke about how every year the locality has been prone to floods as Porur lake surplus canal causes water stagnation. He added that this time around the water has entered into the houses also.Thiruvalluvar Nagar and Arumugam Nagar, 2 of the worst affected  localities in Mugalivakkam, have got SWD connected to Adyar as the disposal point is known. It is now said that the flooding due to the surplus canal has overwhelmed the infrastructure.

According to another resident WRD must ensure that the canal does not cause flooding in this locality. In addition to flooding, lack of water has also been an issue here and the residents have been suffering. As per an officer from WRD, no other options were available for them as of now except to pump out water from Kolapakkam and Mugalivakkam as they were low lying.

The officers belonging to Chennai Corporation have associated with the officers from WRD to make sure that water from the canal doesn`t flood the streets
