Inundation reduced from 561 hotspots in 2021 to 31 now - Except KK. Nagar & Tondiarpet, other Chennai localities were free from inundation!!

From what might be the last bout of rains during the first spell of NE monsoons on Saturday night, the residents in Chennai woke up on Sunday morning to a huge surprise. It  is important to note that most of the streets and neighbourhoods did not get affected by flooding.

This has clearly shown that the last minute efforts and drain repair works of GCC have been highly successful. It was brought out by the Met Dept that a new low pressure would form on 16th of November over the Bay of Bengal and it would move towards the coast and bring rains in the coastal places in Tamil Nadu. It must be noted that IMD has predicted light rains with thunder and lightning in the next 24 hours in some localities in Chennai.

Point is that Chennai yesterday remained free from inundation except in KK. Nagar and in Tondiarpet . The Rajamannar salai in KK, Nagar saw heavy inundation and that was due to the fact that the water did not flow into the drains. The bitter fact is that the new drains did not function as they were not connected to water channels. Motorists faced issues as Arcot Road in Vadapalani was inundated. To oversee the maintenance works on the canals, drains and road patch zones etc, GCC Commissioner and municipal administration minister made their presence felt in several locaities.

In Saidapet, the health minister and minister for Highways were busy inspecting the SWD works. It was brought to light by a study from GCC that the inundation fell from 561 water stagnation hotspots in 2021 to just 31 in 2022.

From 31 areas in Kodambakkam, the flooding now has decreased to just 5 areas now and  from 79 areas the flooding now has reduced to just 6 areas in Perungudi.
