Be very careful about the potential death traps in localities like Porur, Valasaravakkam etc in Chennai

The presence of many uncovered manholes on the roads in Chennai have become a huge issue for the motorists as well as for the Chennai Corporation authorities. The manholes have been designed poorly and they are broken or with protruding rods or partly covered etc. It is now said that these manholes are potential death traps for the motorists and for the pedestrians also.

Now, the Chennai Corporation has been doing its best to repair the manholes in several places in the city on a temporary basis is known. It must be noted that before the monsoon began the roads in Chennai were dug for SWD works and for sewage connections work etc. Bitter truth is that the contract workers have failed to close these and as a result many vehicles get stuck up in the many holes dug up in places like Valarasawawakkam, KK, Nagar and in Porur etc.

During rains, the situation would become worse for the public in these places as there would be water on most of the roads. Inspite of several complaints no action has been taken by the corporation.  According to a resident belonging to Valasaravakkam, his car wheel got struck up in the open manhole. He added that there was no concrete built around the manhole doors. It is noteworthy that to drain the water present on the manhole, the residents and shopkeepers open the  structure when water stagnates during the rainy season.

According to an activist it was confirmed that with the open potholes and manhole doors the number of accidents have become more now in Valasaravakkam. Few days back, a lorry got stuck up on the open, unclosed manhole in Porur. He then revealed that inspite of complaints filed through Namma Chennai App, no response have been received from the officers till now. The residents have also asked the government to re-lay the road before the monsoon has begun.

It was brought out by the chief engineer of GCC ( General) Mr. S. Rajendiran that old manholes were made of cement concrete and iron. He explained that now fibre reinforced concrete and plastic doors are being used.
