Those Chennai residents who are worried about the unauthorised internet wires hanging at their residences and streets etc could breathe easy now!!

The news is that Chennai Corporation would be organising a drive every Saturday to get rid of these unwanted wires. It is learnt that Mr. Gagandeep Singh, GCC Commissioner, has ordered the electrical department staff to cut any illegal or dangling internet wires in every zone.

Till january 2023, the staff belonging to the electrical department would be carrying out this work and a schedule has been prepared for this. This was according to Mr. C.A. Balamurali, superintending engineer of the electrical department. It is important to note that every week one ward from each zone in GCc would be taken up for the removal of unauthorised internet wires. The total workforce of GCC would be doing the work in Chennai.

In the monthly council meeting, MDMK council member from ward 35 spoke about the issue of unauthorised cables  sprouting across Chennai and costing the corporation money. He threw light on how the private operators in his ward had work orders that were valid till 2019-20 and had been installing new cables outside the permitted boundaries.

It was brought out by some official documents that approximately 5400km of optical fibre cables or OFC were allowed for installation. It is shocking that Chennai now has an additional 4000 km of illegal OFC. In an effort to reduce this infringement, GCC had increased the rate per km in 2019 from Rs 43100 to Rs 47200.
