To prepare the students in the schools for examinations, the educationists and teachers in Tamil Nadu want open book tests and group discussion or GD etc now. It is known that the school education department has been gearing up to organise quarterly examinations of the students in the September last week.

To fill the learning gap (two years of physical classes in the schools have been lost as the schools did not function properly due to the Coronavirus infection pandemic), the TN government has initiated several schemes and initiatives. It is noteworthy that from the academic year 2022-2023 onwards the students have been attending direct physical classes in the schools. The school education department has been facing a few issues like lack of enough teachers and the number of students getting dropped out from the schools.

The educationists as well as the teachers have mentioned that conducting open book tests and GD would be very interesting because it would involve the application of mind. An educationist explained that before the quarterly exams the teachers would be conducting model tests for the school students.

He added that for the model exams an open book test must be there and the teachers must prepare question papers especially for the model exams. Both mind as well as visual sensory would be used by the students when they engage in the open book tests. The students who find answers to the questions by this method would learn and remember the concepts much better for a long time.

It was revealed by another educationist that when the school students take part in group discussions or GD then they would discuss several topics and brainstorm concepts they had learned in their classes. The GD would be of greater benefit if the students of higher classes get involved with the lower class students and share their knowledge.

The TN government must fill the vacancies of the teachers soon and this was brought out by Mr. P.B. Prince Gajendra Babu, general secretary, SPCSS-TN. He spoke about how the school education department has got more than 13000 vacancies for the teachers and how the govt is not showing interest to fill them.
