Chennai Metro City: A penalty of Rs. 1100/- for driving on wrong routes!!

`Wrong route` travel on the vehicle will entail a penalty of Rs. 1100/- from now onwards!
The e-Challan system was introduced in the year 2011 to collect penalties from those who violated traffic rules in Chennai Metro City.
Subsequently, in the year 2017, cashless transaction of penalties for those who violated traffic rules was introduced.
Recently, the system of penalty payment through a QR code has been introduced.
Meanwhile, the traffic police department which could not implement the traffic rules strictly over the last 2 years due to the prevalent coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent lockdown situation, has now taken up the task of implementing the following of traffic rules with more intensive efforts!
More Road Accidents
Cases are booked on those who violate the traffic rules and are responsible for the Road accidents and the resultant loss of lives! More importantly, a large number of cases are booked against those who fail to observe traffic rules in 8 offences including drunken driving, driving while chatting on a cellphone, driving/travelling without wearing seat belts, driving without wearing a helmet, driving vehicles at high speeds, failing to follow the traffic signal
In the second phase of this follow-up on violation of traffic rules, it was established issues such as travelling on wrong routes lead to accidents. The Traffic police department also established that acute traffic congestion is also caused by the `wrong route` travel!
Initially, cases were booked against those taking the wrong route and a penalty of just Rs. 100/- was collected. It was observed that the violators of travelling on the `wrong route` took it rather lightly paying a rather low amount of penalty.
Subsequently, as per the revised Motor Vehicle Act, the Chennai Metro City Senior Police Officials decided to impose a penalty of Rs./ 1000/- for the `wrong route` travellers.
As per this decision, a penalty of Rs. 1000/- was imposed from Monday (5th September) for those who indulged in the `wrong route` travel.
The higher officials of the Police Department informed that this action on the `wrong route` travellers will continue in order to reduce the number of road accidents!
