To facilitate the pedestrian movement near the Nungambakkam railway station, a foot over bridge or FOB was opened for the public use. This new FOIB would be of superb use for more than 2lakh commuters daily as they would be able to reach the railway station from the bus stop near Loyola College and stretches such as Harrington Road in Chetpet.

Point to be noted is that commuters using the suburban trains to reach Chennai city would be able to use FOB to access other modes of transit like bus, autos and share autos etc. This FOB would be of great use for many students belonging to various educational institutions in the area.

Mr. K.N. Nehru, minister for municipal administration inaugurated the FOB and others who made their presence felt were Chennai Mayor Priya, health minister Mr. M. Subramanian and GCC Commissioner MR. Gagandeep Singh Bedi etc. Using the capital grant fund, the FOB was constructed at a cost of Rs 5.42 crores by the Chennai Corporation. An amount of Rs 75 lakhs has been spent on the lighting arrangements.

Salient features of FOB:

The FOB at ward no 110 is of the length of 24.6m and width of 5m. It is worth mentioning here that the ramp (130m in length and width of 3m) is one of the largest in Chennai near a suburban railway station.

To prevent crimes against kids and women, the commuters have asked for security arrangements on the stretch. Lack of adequate lighting at the nights has been complained by many.

There were also many complaints received from pedestrians about the inadequate CCTV surveillance, policing, poor safety and security along the stretch etc in roads like Nelson Manickam Road, Tank Bund Road, Mahalingapuram Main Road and Sterling Road. Zebra crossings for the pedestrians in the area have been inadequate and the civic agency has received many complaints.

There were many accidents in the areas and due to this GCC has been planning to have more pedestrian facilities. Yesterday in ward 100, the municipal administration minister Mr. K. N. Nehru inaugurated a community hall in Anna Nagar zone.
