Till now, passengers travelling in the buses belonging to the TN transport department have been using their cash to pay for their ticket. These passengers often find it difficult with the conductors of the buses regarding paying the exact change for the tickets. This would not be there hereafter.

Electronic and cashless mode of transaction would be taking over and TN transport department has decided to implement this mode for issuing tickets.

Under the TN transport department, government transport corporations are functioning in places like Salem, Coimbatore, Madurai, Villupuram, Kumbakonam, Nellai etc. Moreover, Chennai metropolitan transport corporation as well as government rapid transport corporation is also functioning under the TN transport department. Across the state of TN, 20304 buses in as many as 26 mandals make 1.5 crore trips daily.

Non refundable tickets are being issued to all other passengers except those who travel by reservation of express buses. There are several issues in this paper based ticketing system. Monitoring is very challenging as it involves huge amounts of cash transactions.

Now, the TN transport department has decided to implement the scheme of issuing tickets through electronic and cashless transaction mode. It is now said that the new transaction mode through electronic and cashless method would be implemented in Chennai MTC and in the Madurai and Coimbatore transport corporations.

An amount of Rs 86 crores would be spent on this. There will be automatic implementation of issuing tickets through National Public Travel Card and QR Code. In the year 1811, the department of transport was formed in Tamil Nadu.
