To offset the emission of carbon, CMDA or Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority has carried out a study by opting for an on-grid solar power plant system at the mofussil bus terminus located at Madhavaram in Chennai.

It is now said that the Madhavaram bus terminus could become the first ever in Tamil Nadu to get Net Zero Carbon Emission status. It was later mentioned by Mr. Anshul Mishra member secretary of CMDA the Madhavaram mofussil bus terminus would switch to green energy.

To synergise the energy conservation and efficiency enhancement through on grid solar power generation to migrate towards the net zero carbon status, a study was completed.

The report mentioned about the detailed feasibility study for supplying the Madhavaram mofussil bus terminus with solar power and evacuating the excess power to the electricity grid by means of net metering concept. In the future, the bus terminuses at Kilambakkam and Kuthambakkma would also become net zero carbon emission structures and this was according to Mr. Anshul Mishra.

In these 3 bus terminuses at Chennai the CMDA would be installing 10 megawatt solar plants that would be generating 30500 units per day. This would be done as a part of a mega green project. A 12 kW solar power plant was installed for MMBT by CMDA and now CMDA has decided to upgrade that into 300 KW to produce 1000 units per day. By this, it would achieve net zero energy status.

Detailed project report or DPR has been prepared by CUBE or Centre for Urbanisation Buildings and Environment after a study. This CUBE is a JV between the Government of TN and IIT-Madras.

As a part of a detailed project report, a comprehensive study on site assessment, energy audit, carbon footprint assessment, to get net zero emission calculation, solar plan technology to be selected and drone survey to check the technical aspects of installing  solar plants were conducted.

It must be taken into account that on an average Madhavaram bus terminus had an electrical load of nearly 300KW for lights, fans, air-conditioners, motor pumps etc. The important piece of information is that Madhavaram bus terminus uses 30000 units per month and 272 tonnes of carbon dioxide gets released per year.

To maximize the energy output, the DPR has suggested opting for third generation photovoltaic roof top solar power plants. This would be by installing more than 4800 solar panels of 1450 sq km distance.
