The smaller malls have been affected badly by the e-retail in Chennai and this was brought out by Mr. Aum Gohil an architect. It must be noted that Mr. Aum Gohil won the Asia`s Young Designer Award in 2021. He threw light on sustainability of malls plus effects on the environment etc.

Many people took to online shopping during the Coronavirus pandemic in Chennai. The malls in Chennai were shut down during the lockdown due to the pandemic. After the pandemic, e-retail sales have increased significantly. This has affected the smaller malls to a huge extent. Fact is that even bigger malls have been affected in recent days. It is true that the malls in Chennai have a particular type of architecture and it is a part of a vicious consumer cycle.

Instead of a person buying the required things and coming out, a person buys many unwanted things that are not at all needed. It is mentioned that recycling and reusing must be a part of consumerist culture. Mr. Aum Gohil later spoke about how a method must be introduced in such programmes within a larger chain and that it must change the people`s mindset. To reduce the generation of waste, each and every person must play the role and contribute towards circularity.

He added that at present the malls are only for consumption and the malls could be turned into both consumption and production by following certain ways to protect the environment. He concluded that moving towards zero waste is very important.
