At the Koyambedu market in Chennai, the prices of the fruits increased by 10 percent due to the rains that has led to issues in the arrivals. The price of fruits would normalise in Chennai once the month of Aadi gets over. This was brought out by some traders. The fruit supply would get affected again if it continued to rain in the neighbouring states.

It was revealed by a wholesale trader at the Koyambedu market that currently around 150 vehicles are received at the market every day. From next month, the number of vehicles would increase and till then the prices would remain stable or increase marginally. Fruits like guavas, apples and sweet lemons get sold rapidly because of the temple festivals in Chennai.

Recently, Koyambedu market received Indian Apples and arrivals would be there for another 4 months. It is learnt that apples with 28kg boxes are being sold for Rs 3000 to Rs 3500.The cost would reduce after 10 days due to the adequate supply. Fruits like guava are being sold for Rs 150 to Rs 250, grapes Rs 80 per kg, pineapples for Rs 35 to Rs 40 per kg & sweet lemons for Rs 25 to Rs 35 per kg. The sudden rains in TN have affected the fruit sales in the summer season in Tamil Nadu.

Another trader at the Koyambedu market explained that despite poor sales in the festival season many hoped that the situation would improve in the summer months. The change in climate has led to poor sales and this has severely impacted fruit traders.
