Does marital status determine the character of a male person and finally his job?

If you are male having outstanding teaching qualifications but unmarried or single, then you might not be given the teaching jobs in the schools.

According to a male teacher job aspirant from Tindivanam it was confirmed that he has been attending many interviews for the teacher’s job in the private schools in Chennai in the last 1 year. Till now, he has not been able to get his desired job. The reason that has been given by the school management was he was unmarried or single. He has been rejected by various private Chennai schools atleast thrice for being single.

It must be remembered that in the recent months many incidents of male teachers sexually harassing the female students have come to the light. This has led to outrage in Chennai as well as in the state of TN. Now, young and aspiring teachers have been facing the real brunt of this situation.

This teacher has come from his native place in Tindivanam to Chennai in search of a teaching job. From the middle of 2021 onwards, he has been attending many interviews for the post of the teacher. He threw light about how in every interview he was asked about his marital status as the first question.

A private school in Chennai has clearly told him that the school only wanted married male teachers and not unmarried male teachers. The shallow thinking of the private school managements in Chennai has come out now. Truth is that there are no reports available to prove that only unmarried teachers harass the school students. It is learnt that the percentage of men in the teaching field has gone down now.

The aspiring teacher who had completed B. Ed spoke about how among 400 students who did B. Ed course with him just 50 have got teacher jobs in several schools and how just 3 students were men.

It is now mentioned that low salary coupled with heavy workload and new stigmas like preference for only married males etc would reduce the number of male teachers in the schools. It is important to mention here that another teacher aspirant was asked by two school managements in Kancheepuram to apply for the post of teacher only after his marriage.

It was brought out by Mr. Nandhakumar, Secretary, Tamil Nadu, Primary, Matriculation, Higher secondary and CBSE Schools Association that this was a precautionary step taken by the schools because harassment charges would spoil the name of the schools. He added that schools should not reject a male aspirant regarding his marital status. He concluded that the schools could do background checks if they want but must provide jobs to the teaching aspirants.
