Four students of Pachaiyappa`s College near Avadi on Friday evening were hacked by a gang who barged into a moving train. The students, who took refuge in the station manager`s room, are undergoing treatment at the Tiruvallur government hospital. Eyewitnesses told police that the gang of about 10 youths entered the train before it came to a halt at the Hindu College railway station at 5.30pm. They had their faces covered with kerchiefs. They started attacking the students with knives and swords.

Police said the victims tried to flee, leaving behind their bags, at the sight of the assailants. However, the gang chased them and inflicted injuries on them. The injured students managed to jump off the moving train and ran into the station manager`s room. The assailants then jumped off the train to the other side of the tracks and escaped. The injured students were identified as Joshwa, 18, Nagaraj, 19, Manikandan, 18, and Hemanathan, 19.

Joshwa and Manikandan sustained injuries on their head, while Hemanathan and Nagaraj were injured on their neck and hands. The injured students were taken to a private hospital in Pattabiram and later shifted to the government hospital in Tiruvallur.

"It is obviously due to previous rivalry. Some others students in the compartment would have alerted the gang about the presence of these four boys. We couldn`t get many eyewitnesses as the batch of passengers had left," said a railway police officer.
