New! A special over-bridge for animals! To prevent death by vehicles while crossing the road

A special over-bridge is to be constructed for the first-ever time at Vadippattu in Tamil Nadu for animals to cross safely!
As a means to prevent accidents/deaths which happen when the forest animals cross the road and get hit by speeding vehicles, a special over-bridge is set to be constructed at the mountain near Vadippattu in Tamil Nadu!
Under the central government scheme, ‘Bharath Mala Pariyojana’, the project of constructing a highway from Vadippattu to Sittampatti in Madurai District for Rs. 558 Crores has been in progress since the year 2019.
So far, 80% of the construction work has been completed! This highway is designed to pass through the forest located near Palamedu in the mountain Vaguthamalai forest area.
As a measure to protect all the rare animals in this forest and to enable them to move from one mountain to another, an ‘Animal Pass Over-bridge’ is proposed to be constructed by the National Highways Department covering a distance of 210 metres.
The central department of National Highways has requested the Forest Department of Tamil Nadu State Government to permit the construction of the Animal Pass Over-bridge.
The Forest Department of the State Government of Tamil Nadu has now permitted the construction of this over-bridge for animals!
As such, the construction of the ‘Animal Pass Over-bridge’ is set to commence shortly. The National Highway Commission has informed us that the bridge will be ready for service by next year. It is worth noting here that this would be the first0ever over-bridge constructed specially and exclusively for animals!
In this regard, Madurai District Forest Officer Gurusamy Tapilo said: “This exclusive over-bridge will help prevent the human-animal clash! Further, there is a plan to construct a narrower bridge of 2.5 metres in width under this over-bridge to facilitate the smaller animal to cross! Barriers and fences are also to be set up across this animals-exclusive over-bridge!”
