Implementing sex education in the schools in TN - Whats the latest?

Posted on: 16/May/2022 9:54:46 AM
With the increased usage of smart phones and laptops etc, it has become so easy for the students to know about sex these days.

The gap between student’s welfare and the quality of education has been addressed by means of various schemes and initiatives by the school education department in Tamil Nadu. The news is that the activists now want better implementation of sex education in the schools in TN now.

Mr .Prince Gajendra Babu, general secretary of State platform for Common School System of SPCSS-TN expressed his thoughts about sex education for the school students. He wanted the sex education topic to be taught in the class as health education topic. He added that related workshops must be conducted for the sake of the school students.

It is worthy to mention here that sex education must be taught as social sciences subject under civics section or taught as a part of zoology subject and in language class too. Health education must be the correct word and not sex education so that it could create huge impact amongst the school children

Teachers generally feel shy about talking sex oriented topics with the school students. While teaching about human immunodeficiency virus or HIV in the schools, teachers generally do not talk much about the trans persons and they just teach textual definition of HIV.

The education experts feel that the lack of awareness about sex has been responsible for the recent incident where a school girl was sexually exploited by 4 boys aged 13. These boys were booked under the Pocso Act. It was later mentioned by Mr. Andrew Sesuraj, state convenor for TN Childs Right Watch or TNCRW that the state curriculum must discuss about sex education and body anatomy etc. By this, children would not get spoiled and proper guidance would save the future of the child.
