Posted on: 12/May/2022 3:47:45 PM
On the one side, the ever-minute-growing modern communication technology has shrunk the whole world into a small village! On the other side, with just a cell phone on hand, some cybercriminals indulge in cyber crimes swindling huge sums of money!

As per the Cybercrime Police info, beyond the crimes such as getting OTP (One-Time-Password), sending QR-codes, and sending links under the guise of KYC-Update (Know Your Customer), etc., nowadays cybercriminals focus on well-earning people, senior citizens, cheating them!

The cybercrime police have also explained the different types of crimes currently deployed by cybercriminals!

Using some female’s photograph, as a Profile Picture and Chat Apps and after becoming friends, they cheat!

  • They make friends on the social networking media such as Facebook, Twitter.
  • They talk through Messenger, get the WhatsApp number, use the WhatsApp Voice Changer and talk in a female voice and indulge in the sweet conversation!
  • They use the photograph of some foreign lady, talk in a female voice, and inform us that they are visiting India to invest!
  • They will show the photographs of the Airports of Mumbai & Delhi and will make them believe that they have landed at the airport.
  • Then they will claim they have huge sums of money (British Pounds) and claim they may be detained by the Customs because of this and seek some monitory help to get released from the customers.
  • To make believe it is all real, they will show some videos/photos of Indian Customs Certificates, and bundles of currency or counting the currency bundles!
  • At first, they will ask to send an amount such as Rs. 1 Lakh to the Bank Account they give. After that, they will demand payments under the guise of Customs Charges, Transition Charges, Late Fee Charges, etc. to be sent to the given bank account. The gullible listeners believe all this, really send huge sums of money and get cheated.
  • Talking with a foreign accent, this cybercrime gang cheat the women who have registered on Matrimony Websites!
  • Further, they talk as though calling from abroad, proposing business, and asking for money saying that Indian Items such as Animal Vaccine Oil, Oil Seeds, and Powders are the ingredients for manufacturing medicines and being exported! Speaking thus, they will demand money and get it too!

As such, the Chennai Metro City Police Commissioner, Sankar Jiwal, has cautioned the public:

  • So, the public - men & women - or organisations, must ALL be careful when anyone contacts through social networking media or e-mail as though speaking from a foreign country!
  • Whether it is trading/commerce or wedding, check with the right persons. When such persons ask for money, immediately cut off the link or contact! Do not send any money.
  • In case, a smaller amount of money is lost, do not indulge in sending more money with the hope of recovering thehe lost money! Sure, these criminals will never return any money!
  • So, as per the above info, do not believe any contact in social networking media such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Telegram, etc., and send any money!
