Expanding to 4-lanes on the 105km stretch on the ECR between Mamallapuram and Puducherry would be carried out by NHAI. The work would begin soon. On 8th April 2022, the state government issued no objection certificate or NOC after the NHAI threatened to abandon the project to expand the 2-lane road. More than 14000 vehicles use this road stretch on ECR every day.

It was confirmed by the regional officer of NHAI Mr. Somasekhar that work would start soon. It must be noted that the TNRDC (An agency that maintains ECR) has demanded Rs 222 crores compensation for handing over the required land and NOC has been struck.

Under the Bharatmala Pariyojana Scheme, a staggering amount of Rs 3000 crores has been sanctioned and inspite of the amount the work was not started. The truth is that money was needed to repay loans that were taken to construct and maintain ECR and this was as per TNRDC.

For the lost revenue, TNRDC needed compensation as the toll plaza was handed over to NHAI. Mr. V Irai Anbu TN chief secretary referred the issue to state highways secretary, Mr Dheeraj Kumar after NHAI wanted to scrap this project. Information is that the state government would be helping TNRDC in handling the liabilities.
